Chapter 15

A few weeks passed since the little strip tease in the forest. I kept my eyes open for more dreams that might give me a hint of Sareeva’s intentions, but nothing turned up aside from bog standard nightmares of the war. You know, the ghosts of all the people I killed chasing me. Being trapped in a trench and the earth swallowing me up. Reliving the old battlefields. The usual. Not helping things was that neither Vattia, myself, nor the others came up with any new clues, and eventually I got another eagle message summoning me to speak with the headmistress.

The door let me in without issue, and I entered. The office was the same as ever, I noticed. Even the headmistress was there.

She was not, however, alone.

I recognized the paladin from Noirveil’s demonstration instantly. Anoru stood at rigid attention before the headmistress’s desk, hands clasped behind her back and antlers poking from her helmet. Near at hand was another paladin. A fox-girl to judge by the tail and ears poking from her helmet. Her armour was less elaborate than Anoru’s, with a plainer helm and sunburst tabard, and she wore a pair of spectacles under her helmet. She gave me a quick smile, but wiped it off as soon as Anoru glanced at her.

“Alister,” Elegantra said, rising with a welcoming smile and wobble of her hat. “Thank you for joining us.”

“Yeah, no problem,” I said, giving the paladins another look. Anoru just glared at me a little, and I quickly turned my attention back to Elegantra. “So… what’s this about?”

Elegantra sat down behind her desk, her wooden and flesh hand clasping before her. “Since you’ve raised your concerns, I wanted to assure you we have been doing our due diligence concerning the demonic portal beneath the school. As such, I thought it would be a good idea to give you an update.” She gestured at the woman beside her. “This is Anoru Streiss. She is the leader of the sealing corps from the Order of the Blessed Sun.”

“Nice to meet you,” I said.

“Indeed,” she replied rigidly.

“And this is Fillia, her assistant,” Elegantra added, nodding to the second woman.

“A pleasure,” the other paladin said.

Elegantra made an inviting gesture to the stern elk-girl. “Anoru?”

“We have examined the seals thoroughly,” she said, arms clasped behind her back. “And have also checked on the health of the Tree of Ages as well. We have found no cause for alarm or breach among its designs. Fillia?”

“Yes,” the other paladin said, fetching out a ledger and quickly flipping through it. “However, we have noted unusual activity within the rift itself. A squad we had enter the rift on a standard suppression mission has not returned by its normal schedule.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It’s hardly unusual,” Anoru continued. “Missions can take longer, and the infernal realm is irritatingly hard to navigate. But when it comes to the works of demons, we will not be caught unprepared. They are cunning creatures. Cruel creatures! And we will not stop from preventing their foul influence from touching our virginal world.
